Guide to Selecting the Best Engagement Photos for Your Wedding Invitations

Once you and your fiancé have decided on your wedding date and venue, it’s time to start thinking about who to invite and ensure that your nearest and dearest mark your big day on their calendars. But where do you start from? How can you find the right wedding invitation? The one that represents you both as a couple but also matches the tone of your wedding and gets the right information across. Should you have your engagement photos in there or not? How do you choose the right photos? There are so many unanswered questions - and that’s exactly what we’re going to be discussing in this article. But before we do so, let’s take a look at engagement sessions.

What is an engagement session?

An engagement session is essentially a photoshoot with your potential wedding photographer, to have a practice-run, get to work with each other before your big day and see what works best for you both. It’s also a chance for you to see what poses you love the most before you put on your dress and get those stunning wedding photos. But engagement photos are more than just snapshots; they make up one of the first milestones in the next big chapter of your lives as a couple and the first marker in your wedding planning journey. As a destination wedding photographer, we offer pre-wedding shoots (essentially engagement) in our full day package which lets you have a little practice with us, explore some of the best poses for your photos and spend quality time together as a couple discovering a new location! We do love travelling to new places!!

The fundamentals

One of the best ways you can add a personal element to your invitations is by having one (or more) photos of you as a couple on the invitation. But choosing your wedding invitations is a big decision since it’s the first look at the aesthetics of your big day - and it sets the tone for the festivities to come.

If you’re thinking of adding your photos to your wedding invitation and RSVP, then the first step is to find the right wedding photographer.

How to select the right photo?

As a wedding photographer and videographer, we usually deliver 100+ photos from a pre-wedding shoot. These shoots tend to take place around a year before the wedding day so it gives you enough time to use the photos for the rest of the planning, designing stationary, green wedding invitations and perhaps a photo collage of you two as a couple for your big day.

But as you can image, deciding on a single photo out of 100+ photos can be quite challenging. When deciding on a photo, we’d recommend that you consider the following:

  1. Image size & resolution

Ensure the photo you’re going to use is suited for printing purposes. This means the image needs to be hi-res for best quality when printed.

  2. Connection

The photos you choose should clearly show and represent the connection and bond between you as the couple so with that in mind, choose one that is intimate and cute.

  3. Landscape or portrait

Whether you go for a landscape or a portrait image depends on the design and aesthetic of wedding invitation you are going for but this shouldn’t be too difficult. When it comes to design, it takes a little playing around to find out what looks best and truly represent you two as a couple.

  4. Align it with your theme or colour scheme

Chances are, you’ve probably decided on a colour scheme for your big day so the photos you choose for your wedding invitation should match that to set the right tone.

With all of the above said, let’s take a look at a few different wedding invitations to give you some ideas and inspiration and help you select yours.
