You might have already considered eloping in Scotland… or the idea might be completely new to you. Elopements are steadily on the rise and they’re a different way of getting married. Here are some of the reasons why you should consider eloping.

Elopements don’t involve planning a huge ceremony with tons of guests, food, favours, accommodation, music and the usual things that come with planning a traditional wedding. Some couples dream of a lavish wedding with tons of guests but elopements are perfect for adventurous, free spirited couples and those who are looking to get married in a wonderful way but don’t want to spend a lot. Elopements are relaxed, stress free and focus a lot on the location and intimacy.

Elopements used to be for couples who wanted to get married without informing family - the couple would run away together into the sunset! Elopements nowadays still involve two people getting married in a much more intimate manner than traditional weddings but some people now choose to have a small number of guests at their elopement. Couples usually have anywhere between 1-20 guests, a perfect number to invite those nearest and dearest.

The main events at an elopement centre around special vows, exchanging rings and appreciating a beautiful location. Which is why the Isle of Skye is the perfect place to elope.

Scotland itself is one of the best places to elope as it’s the only place in the UK where you can legally get married ANYWHERE. The only requirement is that your ceremony is done by a registered celebrant, you don’t need to be a citizen. To find a registered celebrant make sure you contact the local office located in Portree. Anyone outside the European Economic area or Switzerland should apply for a marriage visa within 3 months of your elopement for a small fee of...£95.

With the average wedding costing around £30,000, the full cost of an elopement comes in at around £5000-8000 - that’s including the ceremony, photography and videography, flowers, dresses, props and paperwork.
